Lum-Tec Solar Marine 5, 6, 7 and 8 Compared: Which 2026 Solar Diver Is Right for You? - The CGA Company

Lum-Tec Solar Marine 5, 6, 7 and 8 Compared: Which 2026 Solar Diver Is Right for You?

Lum-Tec's Solar Marine series is "back by popular demand" for 2026. In the brand's words, it was "designed from scratch to be the perfect everyday companion": a compact 39mm dive watch with a solar-powered movement, a perfectly symmetrical dial and MDV lume. Four versions are currently available at CGA Watches: the Solar Marine 5, 6, 7 and 8. Under the surface they share nearly identical engineering, so the choice mostly comes down to finish, color and how much wear the watch will see. Here is how they compare.

What Every Solar Marine Shares

According to Lum-Tec's specifications, all four models are built on the same platform:

  • 39mm forged and heat-treated 316L stainless steel case, 10.7mm thick including sapphire
  • 43.5mm lug-to-lug and 20mm lug width, with drilled lugs for easy strap changes
  • 300 meters water resistance
  • Rotating bezel with a steel insert and luminous pip
  • Solar-powered VS42A movement from Japan. Lum-Tec says just 1 minute of sunlight produces a full day of power, and a full charge (5 hours of sunlight) gives a 6-month power reserve
  • Anti-shock movement mounting system
  • 2mm thick sapphire with double-side AR coating
  • Threaded solid 316L caseback and threaded crown with double Viton® seals
  • Semi-transparent black solar dial with grade A BGW9 Super-LumiNova markers in metal surrounds, plus diamond-cut BGW9 hands, using MDV luminous technology
  • Nylon military-style strap
  • Lifetime free seal cleaning, lubrication and pressure testing, plus a two-year limited warranty

Lum-Tec's 2026 announcement, published as a sponsored post on aBlogtoWatch, says the series was first launched in 2022 and expanded in 2023. The 2026 versions add "thicker lume application, updated hands and dials, new colorways, and tougher PVD coatings."

Solar Marine 5: Classic Steel

Lum-Tec Solar Marine 5

The Solar Marine 5 pairs a brushed and polished steel case with an anti-fingerprint coating and matched 316L stainless strap hardware. It is the traditional dive-watch look, easy to dress up or down, and is listed at $545.

Solar Marine 6: Blacked-Out Stealth

Lum-Tec Solar Marine 6 black PVD

The Solar Marine 6 trades the polished steel for a bead-blasted black titanium carbide PVD hard coating with anti-fingerprint coating, and matching black PVD strap hardware. If you want a low-glare tactical look against the black solar dial, this is the one. It is listed at $595.

Solar Marine 7: Steel With a Fresh Face

Lum-Tec Solar Marine 7

The Solar Marine 7 is another stainless option, with nylon strap hardware in brushed steel. It shares the series' core specifications, including the 39mm forged case, 300 meters of water resistance and VS42A solar movement. Compare the photos on each listing side by side to see which colorway suits you best. It is listed at $545.

Solar Marine 8: Titanium Nitride Hard Coating

The Solar Marine 8 gets the most distinctive finish of the group. Lum-Tec hand micro-polishes the case and then applies a titanium nitride PVD hard coating. The brand describes it as the same "drill bit coating" used to reduce wear on cutting tools, chosen for extreme hardness and scratch resistance. An anti-fingerprint layer goes on top, and the nylon strap carries matched polished PVD hardware. It is listed at $595.

Quick Comparison

  • Solar Marine 5: brushed and polished 316L steel with anti-fingerprint coating ($545)
  • Solar Marine 6: bead-blasted black titanium carbide PVD ($595)
  • Solar Marine 7: brushed and polished 316L steel ($545)
  • Solar Marine 8: micro-polished titanium nitride PVD ($595)

Lum-Tec lists each model as a limited and numbered series of 300 worldwide.

Why Solar Makes Sense in a Tool Watch

A solar quartz movement removes the two classic chores of watch ownership: winding or regulating a mechanical movement, and replacing batteries on a schedule. With a 6-month reserve on a full charge, a Solar Marine can sit in a watch box between wears and still be running when you pick it up, as long as it gets regular light. Add 300 meters of water resistance, a sapphire crystal and a 10.7mm-thin case, and you have a dive watch that slips under a cuff as easily as it handles a weekend at the lake.

Like every Lum-Tec, each Solar Marine is designed, hand-assembled and fully tested in Ohio. For a broader look at how this series fits with the rest of the catalog, read our guide How to Choose the Right Lum-Tec Watch.
